The Department of Meteorology issues a red alert warning of heavy rains, strong winds and rough seas. It is valid till 11:00 am today.

The deep depression over central-eastern Bay of Bengal has developed into Cyclone Dana. The system moved northwestward and developed into a severe cyclonic storm in the northwest Bay of Bengal by this morning.

It is expected to cross West Bengal and North Odisha coast towards the Indian mainland sometime between tonight and tomorrow morning.

Therefore, there may be heavy rains with very strong winds between 70 and 80 kilometers per hour in those sea areas.

Due to this, these sea areas become very rough. The fishing and shipping community is requested not to sail in the sea area between 10 and 22 north latitude and 83 and 99 east longitude today and tomorrow.

The community is requested to pay attention to the upcoming announcements issued by the Department of Meteorology in this regard.

The Department of Meteorology also issues a warning about strong lightning. There is a possibility of strong lightning with isolated thundershowers in North, East, North Central and Uva provinces and Matale district.

People are requested to take measures to reduce the accidents caused by it. In the past 24 hours, the highest rainfall in the island has been received in Tihagoda area of ​​Matara district.

It is 85 mm. Western, Sabaragamuwa, South and North-West provinces and Mannar district will experience occasional rain or thundershowers. Heavy rains of more than 100 mm are possible in some areas.
