Today marks the 30th anniversary of the passing of Gamini Dissanayake, a prominent political figure in the country.
He was a presidential candidate in the 1994 elections and lost his life in an attack while participating in a campaign rally in Colombo.
Dissanayake first entered Parliament in 1970 after winning the Nuwara Eliya electoral district as a member of the United National Party.
He played a key role in drafting the Indo-Lanka Accord, which was signed in 1987 by the late President J.R. Jayewardene and former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.
