Official residences: Reminders has been issued to former ministers.
The Ministry of Public Administration, Home Affairs, Provincial Councils and Local Government says that former ministers have been reminded to hand over their government official residences.
Only 14 official residences have been handed over so far. Houses were given to 28 ministers during the previous government. Payment of outstanding electricity and water bills is mandatory upon delivery.
The ministry has instructed the officials to take over the government quarters only after paying all the bills. The ministry announced that legal action will be taken against former ministers who evade the notification.
Senior Professor of Economics and Statistics Department of the Peradeniya University Wasantha Athukorala says that the current government has to pay the debt taken by the previous government.
The previous government has borrowed about 800 billion rupees monthly from the domestic market to pay the debt. The present government has to borrow to pay that debt.
The current government has to continue to pay the debt taken from treasury bills and treasury bonds. The amount of loan obtained in this way is 4,859 billion rupees. He also said that the government will have to borrow to pay it as they will mature in the next year.
