A statement from the President on the introduction of a new constitution.
President Anura Kumara Dissanayake visited the Acting Supreme Mahanayake of Sri Lanka Amarapura Mahanayaka, Most Venerable Karagoda, Uyangoda, Maitrimurthy thera and received blessings.
The President visited the headquarters of the Amarapura chapter in Wellawatte, Colombo this morning. The President also engaged in a short discussion with the Maha Sangha led by the Mahanayake regarding the current economic, social and political situation.
There, Mahanayake thera pointed out that a strong state should be built by making maximum use of the country’s resources. Then he pointed out that Sri Lanka can rise as an independent country in the world.
The president pointed out that this is a period of political transition when an election has been announced, and stated that his aim is to implement many of the tasks that need to be done faster than now according to the full power of the parliament in the election.
The Maha Sangha also appreciated the example set by the President-led team by not allowing any violence or disturbance in the post-election period.
The Maha Sagha pointed out that during the presidential election, certain groups organized a program of slander against the current president on the basis of religion, and said that it has now been confirmed that those statements are false.
The Maha Sangha pointed out that such things may happen in the future and asked the President to pay attention to it.
President Anura Kumara Dissanayake said that the people have shown the need to change the traditional politics according to the results of this year’s presidential election.
The Maha Sangha asked the President about a new constitution. The President mentioned that he expects to bring a new constitution.
The President said that it is his expectation to do it only after a long discussion as well as a referendum, and pointed out that the previous governments amended the constitution as per their requirement and did not do it according to the consensus of the people.
However, the President said that the country will be stabilized to a certain level and a constitutional amendment will be brought as expected by the people.
