Sri Lankan Navy has arrested 14 fishermen and their mechanised boats last night. Navy said the vessels were taken into the custody in the sea area off the Jaffna Delphi Island.
The Navy claims it has seized 50 Indian fishing vessels and arrested 359 fishermen. So far this year. Meanwhile, Families of fishermen and local people had protested this morning at Jegathapattinam in Tamil Nadu’s Pudukottai district over the Sri Lankan Navy arresting 14 fishermen and seizing their mechanised boats. The fishermen were arrested last night.
In the meantime, an Indian businessman was apprehended by the Criminal Investigation Department CID at Bandaranaike International Airport while attempting to smuggle over 1 kilogram of gold biscuits out of the country. CID said the seized gold biscuits are valued at approximately Rs. 30 million,
The suspect, a 29-year-old man, had arrived in the country from Chennai on the September 06 as a business passenger and returned to the airport last evening to fly back to Bangalore.
He was arrested while waiting at the BIA immigration terminal, with the gold biscuits concealed in his trouser pocket.
