A sum of 246 million rupees has been received as compensation.
The Additional Solicitor General, Dilip Pieris, stated that a sum of 246 million rupees has been received as compensation related to the Easter Sunday terrorist attack case.
He mentioned that 62 million rupees of this amount has already been paid to the victims of the attack. He made these remarks during a hearing in the Supreme Court yesterday.
During the proceedings, the President’s Counsel Shamil Perera, representing His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith, stated that if a list of names of the victims who received compensation is submitted, the existing compensation cases in the district courts could be withdrawn. Approximately 300 compensation cases presented by the victims are currently being heard in the Minuwangoda and Colombo District Courts.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has decided to proceed with contempt of court proceedings against the former Deputy Inspector General of Police, Nilanta Jayawardena, for failing to pay the full compensation amount of 75 million rupees ordered by the Supreme Court regarding the Easter Sunday terrorist attack. he court has directed him to appear on the 7th of next month to present relevant details, and a bench of justices has issued a summons to him.
