2024 parliamentary general election will be done in the next few days.
Commissioner General of Election Saman Sri Ratnayake says that the issuance of preference numbers of the candidates contesting in the 2024 parliamentary general election will be done in the next few days.
690 recognized political parties and independent groups representing the 22 electoral districts of the island are contesting for the upcoming election.
Chairman of the Election Commission R.M.A.L Rathnayake said that observers from 8 countries were invited to observe the election to be held on the 14th of next month.
In addition, Commonwealth election observers and European Union observers are also scheduled to visit Sri Lanka to monitor the general election.
The chairman mentioned that observers from the Asian Election Observation Network will also come to observe the general election.
Mr. Rohana Hettiarachchi, Executive Director of Paffaral Organization, says that this is the first time that a large number of politicians at the national level will not contest the general election. Therefore, he says that this year’s election is very crucial.
It has been mentioned that around 20 politicians who have been at the national level for decades will not contest this election.
Mr. Manjula Gajanayake, Executive Director of the Institute of Democratic Reforms and Electoral Studies, said that more than 50 politicians have left the election battle this year. He pointed out that the majority of party leaders, young politicians and senior politicians will not contest this election.
Police Media Spokesperson DIG Nihal Talduwa says that a special security program is in place for election campaign activities.
