International observers begin monitoring presidential election

Representatives from friendly nations who have arrived to observe the presidential election have commenced their monitoring activities.

They represent countries such as Russia, the Philippines, the Maldives, Nepal, Bhutan, and Bangladesh. During a media briefing held in Colombo today, they stated that they would be involved in monitoring election activities across all regions of the country, including the North and East, in the coming days.

The leader of the group, Chairman of the Maldivian Election Commission Puad Thaufeeq, mentioned that they were invited by Sri Lanka’s Election Commission to participate in this observation mission. He expressed the hope that this effort would support Sri Lanka’s democratic process.

The observation mission will focus on whether a conducive environment exists for voters to exercise their right to vote. The Election Commission and the Police Department have briefed the international election observers on the election process and the security measures in place. The observers expressed satisfaction with the arrangements.

In addition to these observers, 20 Commonwealth observers and 80 representatives from European Union countries will also participate in the monitoring efforts.
