The government has taken steps to increase the basic salary of all government employees from January 2025 by an average value of 24 percent to 50 percent with a view to forming an attractive and effective public service.
The Cabinet approved these reforms to be carried out in the public service from the very beginning of the next year. Chairman of the Committee appointed to look into the salary related issues of government servants, Udaya Seneviratne made these remarks while addressing media at the President Media Division yesterday.
With the proposals of the committee, government servants are entitled to attractive salaries and benefits from next year, he added. Based on factors such as the educational qualifications, experience, responsibilities and roles performed by public servants, the current basic salary will be increased at least 24 percent for the lowest grades and correspondingly 24 percent to 50 percent for all public servicemen.
It has been proposed to adjust the basic salary from January 2025 to an average figure of 50 percent. Mr. Seneviratne said that the 2025 budget will work to deliver in several phases depending on the available fiscal capacity.
