Ven. Galboda Gnanissara Thera’s cremation with State honours today
Ven. Galboda Gnanissara Thera, affectionately known as Podi Hamuduruwo, the Chief Sanghanayake of Colombo Nawa Korale of the Maha Vihara monastic establishment of the Siamese Chapter, and the Chief Incumbent of the Hunupitiya Gangaramaya, will be cremated with full State honours today, at 4:30 p.m. at the Gangaramaya Temple premises in Colombo.
The Chief Incumbent of the Gangaramaya Temple in Colombo, Ven.Galboda Gnanissara Thera passed away on Friday (2).
Gnanissara Thera, a distinguished monk in the lineage of Hikkaduwe Sri Sumangala Nayaka Thera, was widely recognized as “Podi Hamuduruwo of Gangaramaya.” Known for his leadership and visionary efforts in modernizing the temple, his name became synonymous with the temple’s legacy.
The Gangaramaya Temple is noted for its unique approach, emphasising close community engagement and accessibility.
Under the guidance of Gnanissara Thera, the temple prioritised being approachable, with monks working closely with the public to support their well-being.
