World Postal Day is marked today.
Today is World Postal Day. In 1969, the World Postal Union, which met in the capital of Tokyo, Japan, declared October 9th every year as the World Postal Day. The association was established in 1874 in Bern, the capital of Switzerland.
Accordingly, the Universal Postal Union is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year. In 225 BC, the world’s first postal document was discovered in Egypt. A stamp with an image was used for the first time in the world in 1849. Air mail service started in 1912.
The postal service in Sri Lanka was started in 1798 under the leadership of Governor Frederick North. The first post office was established in the cities of Colombo, Galle, Mannar, Jaffna and Trincomalee. On April 1, 1857, Sri Lanka’s first postage stamp with the image of Queen Victoria was issued.
A ceremony organized on the occasion of the World Post Day will be held at Temple House this morning. Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya and Minister Vijitha Herath are the chief guests.
The stamp exhibition organized by the Department of Posts on the occasion of World Postal Day started yesterday at the Colombo Post Office. The exhibition will continue till this Saturday.
