SJB & UNP have encountered an impasse due to two conditions.

Discussions aimed at uniting the Samagi Jana Balawegaya and the United National Party have encountered an impasse due to two conditions presented by the Samagi Jana Balawegaya.

Following the presidential election, the United National Party initiated talks to form a political alliance with the Samagi Jana Balawegaya. This effort included a delegation of prominent figures, such as Deputy Leader Ruwan Wijewardena and former Minister Talatha Atukorala.

So far, this group has held around eight rounds of discussions with the Samagi Jana Balawegaya. However, the talks have become difficult due to two main proposals: one suggesting that the upcoming rounds be conducted via telephone, and the other proposing that Mr. Ranil Wickremesinghe should not be part of the new alliance.

Consequently, the United National Party views the majority of votes received by Mr. Wickremesinghe in the last presidential election as personal votes. Therefore, they assert that they cannot agree to a political alliance that excludes Mr. Wickremesinghe.
